What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
4 min read
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini — can read it, trust it, and cite it in their answers. Where SEO optimizes to rank on a results page, GEO optimizes to be named inside the answer itself.
Why GEO exists now
Buyers increasingly start research inside an AI assistant. They ask "who’s the best vendor for X," get a short list of names, and act on it — often without ever seeing a traditional search results page. If AI doesn’t name you, you’re invisible to that buyer.
How GEO differs from SEO
SEO earns a ranking on a page a person may or may not click. GEO earns a citation inside the answer a person actually reads. The plumbing overlaps — crawlability, content quality, authority — but the target is different: be the source the model quotes.
What GEO actually measures
At GeoJuice we grade six signals: crawler access, structured data, on-page content, technical health, content rendering, and llms.txt. Together they form your Juice Index, a 0–100 score for how citable your site is.
